Street Poets

The Pongo Teen Writing Project is a volunteer, nonprofit program for teens who are on the streets, in jail, or in other ways leading difficult lives. We love to help young people express themselves through poetry, especially teens who have never written before. (And we want to share our teaching techniques with caring adults.) This site is dedicated to the important writing of our authors!

This isn’t from Chicago, but The Pongo Project had a booth up at Seattle’s Folklife Festival where you could buy chapbooks written by teens.  It reminded me of the young man from Chicago I exchanged letters with after he was arrested for hustling on the streets.  I still have his poems and letters.  I only wish something like this program had existed then.  Eric had a lot to say that people need to hear.
